Electrical Audio How-To: Cleaning A Console and Outboard Gear
R.I.P. Steve.
Wait so you need 3 mics
Kinda like tuning a guitar with a digital tuner. Anybody else fine tune with ear afterwards even though the tuner tells you it's perfectly in tune but you don't like it?
That's probably temperament. Well-tempered vs Equal-tempered. We generally use equal so that our instruments are mostly in tune in a variety of keys and across a variety of intervals, but individual intervals will be slightly out of tune.
My head is exploded
I guess most of us are recording into a DAW, I would usually bust go into the tracks zoom in and align the recorded material there.
You omitted to state the temperature unit. The whole world doesn't use Fahrenheit you know?
While that is a fair point, you simply cannot bake tape at 130 degrees Celsius in a food dehydrator.
I love Steely Dan and I also love how Steve hated Steely Dan!
"It's a wonder it works at all" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This guy has publicly gushed about his love of child porn. He should’ve gotten canceled and investigated before he died.
....another great video......but, does anyone know what make those near field monitors Steve was using there? Thanks in advance........
The main near fields in both of our studios are B&W Matrix 805s.

This is genuinely very helpful for a very special few of us. Thanks.
Well well well. Face diaper. Dead. Clear connection between those.
Let's put you in charge of public health! Actually, let's put you in charge of ALL SCIENCE!
I wish you a very good musical career, blessings!
Thanks Greg for this video. I was Studer technician in the early 80th in Vienna / Austria. That was the time of the A80 machines with 2, 16 and 24 tracks. Makes me philosophical to think we can record more tracks with a cellphone today. Btw: Studers first digital tape machine’s weight was nearly 1000 kg and consumed 1000w from the grid. Greetings Wolfgang
"ghost of the clam"
damn the coles sounded way better on the violin, the less treble was great
An inspiration & one of the very best. RIP & thank you!
My audio professor in college used to say "M-S" stood for "Maybe Stereo" hahaha
RIP to an absolute legend
Omg
I'd like to see a precise measurement of the time between eating a bean & cheese burrito and getting kicked out of the control room.
I used to be an engineer like you, until I took an axe to the knee. That would have been funny 10 years ago. Or not .
I wish I could tell Ol' Beener just how helpful this is. RIP.
I feel smarter just trying to follow along with this.
bro i want to kms now im j gonna be stressed i gotta move a mic an inch or sumn and ruin mhy song \
Good God this amp sounds incredible!!
How lucky are we to have videos of Steve Albini Teaching
me at schwarza cafe
Dude maple syrup is not allowed just stop
There's no rules, MAN
I was watching videos of tips from the pros, and I realized that this is Steve Albini who recently left. Thanks Steve. RIP.
Who knew Steve Albini is an incredible teacher! And with humour. And those guitar and bass riffs were killer.
Very sad news.
Is this the same subject matter as the out of phase mics Owsley Stanley designed for the dead...? Thanks....
Still processing this one man. Just unfair.
We miss Steve not being here anymore. RIP good soul.
Steve always thought he was a comedian.

What he said
Thanks Steve. Making me want to setup my acoustic kit again and get back to a full sound. Still gotta listen to the last Shellac release which is sitting right here unopened as of yet. Hard that your singing voice and speaking voice are so similar. Words can't be found
“It’s a wonder it works at all.”
Steve really knew what he was doing, and with such massive attention to detail in getting the fundamentals right (instrument, room, mics, phase).
Brilliant video, so thorough and insightful, thanks a lot!
Love you so much.
Or you could just nudge the tape however many samples till it’s in phase for free.
RiP Steve, Audio Engineers will miss you ❤
Avey Tare looks different here
Rest in peace Steve 🙏😪
I thought I heard the Wilhelm scream 😂
Near field Vs far field.
